Technical overview

Ameritube provides sucker rod pump barrels in C44300 Admiralty Brass for API pumps. Admiralty brass is selected for corrosion resistance and improved longevity over carbon steel in oil-drilling service. Use API Spec. 11AX nomenclature together with the material, clearance, valve, and fittings information required for a complete order.

API pump types

Four configurations

While there are only two main types of pumps standardized by API, there are four different types of sucker rod pumps. These are classified by the type of barrel—standing or traveling—and where the pump is anchored—top or bottom. API Spec. 11AX shows the letter designations for rod and tubing pumps available for different barrel thicknesses and either metal or soft-packed plungers. Ameritube provides the pump barrels in C44300 Admiralty Brass.

  • Standing or traveling barrel
  • Top- or bottom-anchored pump
  • Heavy, thin, or X-type barrel; metal or soft-packed plunger

Nomenclature

Read the designation

The complete pump designation of an API pump adds dimensional diameters and lengths to the letter designations. The latest revision incorporates approved sizes and barrel types and separates extensions into top and bottom lengths where required.

  • Nominal tubing size: 1.9–4.5 in. OD, represented with 2 digits
  • Basic bore diameter: 1.0625–3.75 in., represented with 3 digits
  • Pump type: R for rod or T for tubing
  • Barrel type: H, T, or X for heavy, thin, or X type
  • Seating location: A top, B bottom, or T bottom traveling barrel
  • Seating assembly: C cup or M mechanical
  • Barrel, plunger, upper extension, and lower extension lengths

Worked example

20-125-RHBC-10-4-2-2

API Spec. 11AX shows that a 1¼-in. bore rod-type pump with a 10-ft heavy-walled barrel, a 2-ft upper extension, a 2-ft lower extension, a 4-ft plunger, and a bottom-cup-type seating assembly used in 2⅜-in. tubing would be designated 20-125-RHBC-10-4-2-2.

  • Confirm every dimensional field before ordering
  • Use the complete designation with the component material callouts

Ordering information

Specify the assembly

Users of API pumps need to provide, along with the pump nomenclature, the barrel and plunger material, plunger clearance or fit tolerance, and valve (ball and seat) and fittings material. The materials normally available for each component are included in the latest edition of API Spec. 11AX.

  • Barrel and plunger material
  • Plunger clearance or fit tolerance
  • Valve ball and seat material
  • Fittings material
